mission statement

The Office of Continuing Medical Education at Sharp HealthCare provides educational activities for Sharp-affiliated physicians and other health professionals with the goal of serving the health care needs of San Diego residents and with a commitment to excellence demonstrated by exceptional outcomes for our Sharp patients across the continuum of care.


Purpose and Goals:
The responsibility of the Office of CME is to assess, design, implement, and evaluate educational and training initiatives for Sharp’s health care professionals that foster the delivery of optimal patient care in a cost-effective manner.


Assessment – Educational activities are based on Sharp Healthcare specific performance reports derived from system wide quality and performance studies.

Design - Educational activities are evidence based, validated by the scientific literature, with the intent of influencing physician’s continuing development, practice behavior and patient outcomes.

Implementation – Creative, innovative, multifaceted educational interventions coordinated to reach the widest health professional audience with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

Evaluation – Our goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of our continuing medical education efforts by measuring improved patient outcomes.


Content Areas:
Scientific advancement has lead to innovative diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that require our health professionals to continue their professional education.

Educational activities are consistent with Sharp HealthCare’s specialty services; Cardiac, Orthopedic/Neurology, Women’s, Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Oncology,
Family Practice Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Transplantation, Pathology, Imaging and Trauma.

Educational activities address the following:

  • Clinical processes or outcome research
  • Disease state management
  • Evidence based medicine
  • Clinical guideline development
  • Quality measurement and improvement
  • Population health management
  • Patient and employee safety

Target Audience:
Sharp-affiliated physicians, pharmacists, clinical laboratory personnel, and other health professionals.
